The third year of the EPA’s National Building Competition saw 3,000 buildings battle it out to see which could generate the greatest energy savings. Teams tracked energy savings using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, and the winner was the building that demonstrated the largest percentage reduction in energy use, adjusted for weather and the size of the building, during the competition, compared to a 2011 calendar year baseline.
The winner? Demarest Elementary School in Bloomfield, New Jersey, which cut its energy use by 52% over the course of 2012, resulting in more than $75,000 in savings and avoided emissions equivalent to 267 million tons of CO2.
